Weighting more than €2.64 billion, the German radio market is by far the largest in Europe. Public funding represents the bulk of the resources with close to €1.8 billion. Besides DeutschlandRadio, the national public radio, there are several very powerful regional public radio broadcasters part of ARD (BR, HR, MDR, NDR, RB, RBB, SR, SWR, WDR). The private market is much smaller. Germany is very much influenced by the federal structure of the country, the regulation of audiovisual being made by the “Medienanstalten” (regulators) in each Land (region). This results in a very fragmented landscape with a predominance of local and regional networks, and more than 300 different commercial radio. Besides RTL, NRJ, Klassik Radio and Regiocast, which are small in radio, there is no other national group. In fact, media groups such as Hubert Burda, Bauer Media, Oschmann, Nordwest-Zeitung, Axel Springer, Studio Gong, only owns minority shares in numerous radios, but they have no control. Finally, DAB/DAB+ reaches 98% of the population in Germany and is expanding with the launch in 2020 of a national private radio multiplex, owned by Antenne Deutschland. Digital radio advertising revenues, which combine both website and podcast revenues, have become more and more important in the total revenues of radio groups. Digital radio revenues have reached 9.43% of the total radio advertising revenues in Germany in 2020.
