The Mobile industry in France

Since the launch of the 4th operator Free (Iliad group, part of NJJ Holding) in 2012, the French mobile market has become one of the most competitive in the world. SFR for example, despite acquiring the largest mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) Virgin in 2014, has gone from a subscriber share of 31% to just 21% today. It would be less than 19% without Virgin. The growth of the market was less than 1% per year, with a reduction of mobile retail revenues of €5 billion of revenues since 2012. This is not only to increase competition but also to the gradual decline of messaging (replaced by OTT such as WhatsApp), the end of roaming charges for travellers within the EU since 2018 (which was anticipated in years before), as well as the growing discounts associated with fixed-mobile bundles. Although this is a tough environment we do not expect the market will consolidate to three operators in the near future.
